Spring has Sprung!

Spring has sprung!

Almost. Spring is still hovering offstage and not quite sure is she’s ready for an appearance yet. Time to make some daffodils and narcissi to coax her along.

These daffodils are perfect for yarn graffiti, or an Easter wreath for the front door. Make a few, attach a stalk and you have an all-year round bouquet of spring. Combine with green leaves and attach to a long crochet chain for a cheerful spring bunting!

Daffodil Crochet Instructions

Tension

Tension is not too important. Keep a medium- to firm tension. If it is too loose, the trumpet will be all floppy.

Materials

I’ve used Stylecraft DK Acrylic, because it is available in many colours and a great choice for yarn graffiti. I used a 2.5 mm crochet hook, but a smaller hook would also be suitable. My flowers are just the right side of floppy.

A less sproingy yarn, such as cotton, is also a good choice.

Terminology

The instructions use US crochet terminology. If you need further instructions, there are plenty of illustrated guides and video tutorials online.

Steps

The flower in made in two steps, first the trumpet is crocheted in the round, then the petals attached at the base. If you make it all in one colour, you can start with the petals and attach the trumpet after – variation is fun!

Trumpet

For a daffodil, use yellow.
For a narcissus, use yellow for setup – round 3, and orange for round 4.

setup: 4 ch, join with ss to 1st st to form a ring.
rnd 1: 3 ch, 11 dc into ring, join with ss in top of 3 ch. (12 sts)
rnd 2: 3 ch, 11 dc around worked into front loop only, join with ss in top of 3 ch. (12 sts)
rnd 3: 3 ch, 11 dc around, join with ss in top of 3 ch. (12 sts)
rnd 4: 4 ch (counts as sc + 3 ch), *sc, 3 ch*, repeat from * to * 11 times around, join with ss in 1st st of 4 ch. (12 sc + 12 chains)
fasten off, cut yarn.

Petals

For a daffodil, use yellow.
For a narcissus, use white.

Hold the trumpet with the front facing you. Work round 1 around the back of alternating posts in rnd 1 of the trumpet.

setup: make a slip knot, insert the hook from the back around a post in rnd 1 of the trumpet. Pull a loop through to fasten the yarn.
rnd 1: 4 ch (counts as sc + 3 ch), *skip 1 dc, sc around post from the back, 3 ch*, repeat from * to * 5 times, join with ss in 1st st of 4 ch. (6 sc + 6 chains)
rnd 2: *ss into next ch, 4 ch, 4tr-cl into same ch, 2 ch, ss into top of cluster to form a ring, 4 ch, ss into ch*, repeat from * to * 5 times, join with ss in 1st ss. (6 petals)
rnd 3: * 2 ch, 5 sc around ch, (hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc) into ring at petal tip, 5 sc around ch, ss around ch, ss into next ch*, repeat from * to * 5 times, join with ss in 1st ch. (6 petals)
fasten off, cut yarn.
